Part 2: Tommy The Clown on How He Developed His Clown Character, Creating Dance Style "Clowning"
Part 1: Tommy The Clown on Moving From Detroit to LA & Selling Drugs, Getting Locked Up for 5 Years
--------
Tommy the Clown, the pioneer behind the “Hip Hop Clowns” crew, shared insights into how he transformed birthday parties and parades into positive community events. Starting with just kids, Tommy formed the crew during the Pasadena and Martin Luther King parades in Los Angeles. He emphasized strict rules for his crew: no gang involvement, no drugs, excelling in school, and maintaining a positive lifestyle. His goal was to offer kids a safe, uplifting environment in neighborhoods often plagued by gang conflicts.
Despite doing parties for diverse groups, including gangs, Tommy carefully distances himself and ensures no active gang members remain in his crew to avoid trouble. He has witnessed dangerous moments at parties, but manages to stay positive and focused on keeping kids inspired. Tommy also recounted personal experiences with robbery and violence growing up, underlining the challenges he overcame to become a role model. His “Hip Hop Clowns” continue to promote peace and positivity through unique performances blending dance, clowning, and hip hop culture.
