Part 1: Tekashi 69 on His Biological Father Abandoning Him, Meeting Him at Age 8
--------
Tekashi 6ix9ine opened up about his early life struggles, unique stage name, and the meaning behind his face tattoos and "Scum Gang" affiliation. Growing up as a broke teenager in a cramped Brooklyn railroad apartment with a newborn child, Tekashi described those times not as struggle but valuable life experiences. He adopted the name “6ix9ine” in 2014, initially drawn to the number’s symbolism—his first name, Daniel, has six letters; his last name, Hernandez, nine. The number became his brand, inked prominently across his body.
Tekashi also explained “Scum Gang” as representing those from the bottom of society, a nod to his harsh surroundings in Bushwick, Brooklyn, once plagued by crime and drugs. Early in his career, he gained unexpected support from European audiences, especially in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, through labels that helped promote his music internationally before he fully understood the music business.
