In a candid episode of The War Report, Sergeant Nicholas Irving shared surprising insights from his deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, including his personal approach to coping with harsh desert conditions. Battling extreme heat with temperatures soaring above 120°F, Irving revealed that he never wore underwear during his entire military career. Citing severe discomfort, chafing, and the necessity to stay as cool and mobile as possible, he adopted the local custom of “going commando” under his fatigues. “You don’t want to be constricted; your boys gotta breathe,” he explained.

Irving also described grueling nights without showers—sometimes lasting two weeks—and the overwhelming physical and mental toll, especially during Ranger School, where soldiers endure sleep deprivation, malnutrition, and intense exertion. His raw recount offers a stark look into the daily realities soldiers face in extreme environments, emphasizing adaptability and resilience.
