In a revealing interview, rapper Maino opened up about his harrowing experiences adapting to the brutal realities of prison life, including involvement in the violent practice known as "razor tag." Unlike street violence where guns are common, Maino highlighted that prison fights relied on close-quarters combat, often using makeshift weapons like boxer razors wrapped to create blades. He recalled being thrown into this dangerous world at just 17, in New York’s adolescent facility before being transferred to adult prison.
Maino explained how valuables like jewelry and phones were prized possessions behind bars, sparking deadly disputes. "Kids were getting hurt or worse over phones and jewelry," he said, emphasizing the constant threat of violence and the need to assert oneself. Despite the dangers, Maino adapted quickly, recognizing that survival required a ruthless readiness to engage in razor tag knife fights and maintain respect within the prison hierarchy.
