Former prison guard Darren Monahan shared revealing insights about infamous cult leader Charles Manson during an exclusive interview. Monahan, who interacted with Manson while incarcerated, described the notorious criminal as a complex character who often put on performances for the media but had a unique personality behind the scenes. Notably, Manson was known to speak in ‘hippie slang’ and even crafted handmade items, like a scorpion figure from unraveled socks embellished with his signature swastika.
Addressing prison violence, Monahan recalled that while Manson was generally left alone, there were incidents where inmates targeted him. One particularly harrowing episode involved an inmate attempting to pour gasoline on Manson to set him on fire, although the attack reportedly occurred at a different facility before Manson was placed in protective custody.
Despite his dark legacy, Monahan’s stories highlight the daily realities of managing one of the most infamous prisoners in history.
