Part 1: Darren Monahan on Becoming San Quentin Prison Guard,Threatened for Calling Black Inmate Boy

--------

In a revealing interview, former San Quentin prison guard Darren Monahan detailed an incident involving Crips founder Stanley “Tookie” Williams and fellow inmate Tyquan “Lil Fee” Cox. Both were on death row, with Williams convicted of multiple murders in 1979, and Cox sentenced for a mass murder linked to NFL player Kermit Alexander’s family. According to Monahan, tensions arose when Williams allegedly ordered Lil Fee to stab another inmate suspected of being an informant. Cox refused, prompting a violent confrontation during which Cox stabbed Williams. Despite the attack, Williams’s large physique likely minimized the injury’s severity. Following the stabbing, Lil Fee was placed in extreme isolation, allowed yard time only alone to protect him from retaliation, as Williams reportedly ordered others to kill Cox in response. Monahan explained how death row inmates were segregated by gang and race, with strict measures to maintain order.
