Part 8: Tommy The Clown on Tight Eyez Claiming He's the Only Inventor of Krump: He Created Nothing
Part 1: Tommy The Clown on Moving From Detroit to LA & Selling Drugs, Getting Locked Up for 5 Years
--------
Tommy the Clown, the pioneering creator of Krump dance, reflected on the shift in hip hop culture where artists moved away from dancing, calling it an era when “rappers didn’t want to dance anymore.” Starting his movement in the early ’90s by jumping into kids’ parties in South Central LA, Tommy turned clowning into a global phenomenon, emphasizing youth empowerment and positive energy. Despite ups and downs, the dance form survives and thrives, partly thanks to support from artists like Kendrick Lamar, who feature krump and clown dancers in their music videos, giving the movement renewed visibility. Tommy stresses the importance of keeping kids engaged through dance as a constructive outlet, especially amid challenging personal circumstances. He also revealed plans to take the dance on a national U.S. tour, having already toured overseas.
