Mario Sanchez, a former Norteño gang member, opened up about the complexities and consequences of his decision to leave the gang as a shot caller. Contrary to the aspirations often heard among gang members, Sanchez did not dream of being a high-ranking leader within the prison system, though circumstances placed him in direct contact with such individuals during his sentence at facilities like Pelican Bay and New Folsom.

Reflecting on his time, Sanchez detailed a critical moment that led to his exit from gang activity. After a race-related melee instigated by his orders, he was accused of orchestrating the event. Facing potential indefinite solitary confinement or violent retribution from fellow gang members, Sanchez opted for a different path, driven by a desire to reunite with his family and live a life beyond incarceration. His choice, however, caused him to be criticized by former cohorts. Despite the potential fallout, including threats to his safety, Sanchez decided to dissociate, aiming for change and redemption in his life outside prison walls.
