Part 2: Mario Sanchez on Facing Life with 47-Count Indictment, Becoming a Norteño in Jail
Part 1: Mario Sanchez on Targeting Asians During Home Invasion Spree, Dad Snitched on Him
--------
Mario Sanchez detailed the hurdles he faced after accepting a 10-year plea deal as a Norteño. Transferred from San Francisco's county jail to San Quentin, Sanchez described the imposing nature of the prison's sprawling grounds. Initially processed at San Quentin, Sanchez received his classification points that dictated his placement within California's prison system. Despite his hopes to remain local, Sanchez was transferred to the southern Centinela State Prison near the Mexican border—a predominantly Sureño institution—due to a strategic state-wide expansion of prison facilities during Governor Pete Wilson's term.
While in Centinela, Sanchez recounted the dramatic factional imbalance, noting how severely outnumbered Norteños, like himself, felt. This led to strategic plans devised by experienced inmates to incite a conflict that would warrant transfer and escape from the hostile environment. Despite their efforts to craft weapons for a planned incident, a shakedown thwarted their plans, resulting in solitary confinement.
