Mario Sanchez sheds light on the harrowing "Gladiator Fights" scandal at California's Corcoran State Prison during the early '90s. Corcoran was where the prison's most dangerous inmates were housed and rival gangs were forced into brutal confrontations. Sanchez recounts how guards, seemingly for entertainment, facilitated these deadly brawls by knowingly placing rival gang members in the same yard and even taunted inmates with phrases like "Let's get ready to rumble." From 1989 to 1994, these gladiator-style fights resulted in the deaths of seven inmates and left many others injured. Despite the alarming violence and an FBI investigation that led to charges against eight correctional officers, all of them were acquitted. Mario recounts how one officer involved in a shooting continued to work without suspension, highlighting the prison's systemic lack of accountability during this tumultuous period.
