Former NBA player Gilbert Arenas recently confirmed allegations that the NBA has instructed referees to call fewer fouls on star players. In a conversation with Vlad, Arenas emphasized that the NBA is, first and foremost, an entertainment business, not solely focused on following the rules of basketball. He argued that spectators pay to watch stars play, not sit on the bench due to foul calls. He also discussed that favoritism exists in how some fouls are overlooked or sanctioned. He added that the league would look the other way on certain fouls to allow the entertainment to continue unhindered. The conversation stemmed from a discussion about Tim Donaghy, the ref who was caught betting on his own games. Donaghy previously disclosed that he was notified not to call certain fouls against high-profile players.
