The Black Keys opened up about their experience as musicians and what has led to their greatest hits like “Lonely Boy” and their album El Camino. Exploding into fame with their hit song “Tighten Up,” winning three Grammy awards, and gaining over 500 million streams on Spotify and YouTube, they modestly said it was all surreal. The two even doubted their Grammy-winning song before it was released, finding it “too catchy.” They only included it on the album after a friend bluntly told them they were “idiots” if they didn’t. Transitioning into their album El Camino, Dan and Pat once again underestimated their music. However, following the positive feedback from fellow musicians on their song “Lonely Boy” during a casual Bonnaroo music festival hangout, they realized they had a hit. Today, the band emphasizes following their instinct in music making, reminiscing about their decision to discard an expensive video clip for a simple, single-shot video of a security guard grooving to their hit song “Lonely Boy.” Despite being advised against it, they went with their gut, and the video was an instant success.
