Last week, a 4-year-old boy of Ethiopian American descent became a social media darling after a video clip of him stating his desire to be Mexican during a conversation with his mother popped up all over the internet. The fun exchanged between the mother and her son was broadcast and re-posted by several Latino outlets, including EL IMPARCIAL TV and Azteca Noticias. Eventually, the international story made its way to Mexico's national football team (El Tri), who just so happened to be stateside for the North American soccer tournament called the CONCACAF Gold Gup. So, the team arranged a special meet and greet with their young admirer, where they gifted him with an official game jersey and the quesadillas that he spoke so highly of during his viral video. The memorable meeting between the 4-year-old and El Tri came moments before they defeated Panama in the Gold Cup final at Lofi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Much like his viral video from last week, this playful exchange was also documented on camera. The video shows players from El Tri, such as the team's midfielder Orbelín Pineda and forward Santiago Giménez, sharing some laughs with viral sensation while his mom watched off-camera. For El Tri, their 1-0 victory over Panama on Sunday marked Mexico's 9th Gold Cup championship since the competition began in the early 1990s; it's the most all-time.
