Vybz Kartel’s story since being in prison has found him pushing to get a release. In 2020, it was revealed that the artist would have years knocked off his sentence for murder, with the amount of time he will serve being reduced from 35 years to 32 years and six months. It was noted the Jamaican artist, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, would be released from prison in 2046 at the age of 70. Now, Kartel’s lawyer has made a claim about the conditions the legendary dancehall artist faces in prison.

The “Vybz Kartel Muzik” handle on Instagram, a page for Kartel’s record label, said Vybz’s life is “in danger.”

Kartel’s current lawyer Isat Buchanan gave an update to Urban Islandz, saying the artist is suffering from “ill health.” The lawyer continued saying, “The concerns are two-fold. The Department of Corrections does not have adequate facilities to care for persons with ill health while incarcerated as a guest of the state.” While speaking about Vybz’s current state, the lawyer said, “Mr. Palmer is under private treatment at his expense. It is within the knowledge of prison officials that his health is a concern.”

Buchanan then continued saying: “Since Tuesday the superintendent at tower street adult correctional centre, Superintendent Campbell, has given strict orders to have Adidja Palmer, aka Vybz Kartel under 23 hours lockdown in a poorly ventilated cell despite his failing health at the tower street adult correctional centre as a form of apparent draconian style punishment.”

Kartel’s family issued a statement through a representative, saying he faced negative treatment while locked up because prison guards allegedly found contraband cell phones on the cell block. According to the family, Vybz is the only one being punished for the discovery. The representative then said, “Strangely enough, in addition to the 100s of cell phones found daily at that institution, thousands at lockups across the island, the supt. seems to have ill will against Kartel.” Stay tuned for updates.
