Update 04/08/2023 4:43pm:

In 2019, singer Daniel Caesar went on a rant that found him defending YesJulz after she made comments about Black media personalities and businesswomen Scottie Beam and Karen Civil. YesJulz, who is white, was also facing backlash after posting a photo featuring a t-shirt that said “n***as lie a lot” on the front.

Caesar hopped on IG Live and defended Julz, saying, “Why are we being so mean to Julz? Why are we being so mean to white people right now? That’s a serious question. Why is it that we’re allowed to be disrespectful and rude to everybody else and when anybody returns any type of energy to us. That’s not equality. I don’t wanna be treated like I can’t take a joke.”

Since then, the singer appeared on Apple Music 1 and spoke to Nadeska about the backlash he faced in 2019 for his comments. “I completely understand the response. And in time, after taking time to get over myself and to really honestly look at myself and everything that was happening, I was wrong. I was wrong, and I’m sorry about that. For a long time, I was like, ‘You can’t do anything, you can’t say anything without whatever,’” said Caesar.

He continued explaining what he thought would happen when he made his statement. “I felt in that moment that I could say what I had said and the context of who I am would be taken into account. But I guess people don’t know who I am. I thought at the time that I was saying something, meaning well, but it didn’t, and it hurt people and I don’t want to hurt anybody,” said Caesar. Earlier in the week, Daniel Caesar caught some criticism for his recent comments on racism, where during a live stream he downplayed it's significance while ultimately saying that black people need to stop being mean to Caucasians.

"Why are we being so mean to white people right now?" Caesar asked in reference to the backlash that media personality Yes Julz had been receiving, "Why is it that we're allowed to be disrespectful and mean to everyone else, yet when they return that same energy to us - that's not a quality, I don't want to be treated like I can't take a joke." The latter reference was in relation to a previous story involving Caesar, where he had an awkward exchange with Dave Chappelle when the comedian called him gay to his face during another live stream.

From there, Caesar went on to briefly acknowledge the historical precedence of racism in the world, while stating that ultimately the best course of action is to get over it "and keep it moving."

With all that said, TMZ recently caught up with Waka Flocka and his wife, Tammy Rivera, to ask for their thoughts on Caesar's comments, to which they dismissed him as someone who's clearly not informed.

"He doesn't know what's going on he's Canadian," said Rivera, while adding that the moment he gets pulled over in America he'll learn all about racism. Waka then added "bro don't speak about American business if you ain't from here," before suggesting that he stays away from Brick Squad for his ill-advised comments.

"Don't you ever in your life talk about black people like that," Waka concluded, "the n**** got his hair blond he shouldn't talk about black people."
