This May will mark the 23rd anniversary of one of the most influential albums in the history of hip-hop, The Marshall Mathers LP by Eminem. Released on May 23, 2000, the third studio album by Dr. Dre's protégé would go on to sell over 11 million copies domestically. The cultural impact of the tracklist would leave a lasting impression on the mainstream, the media, and the generation of rappers that would follow with evocative compositions such as "The Way I Am," "The Real Slim Shady," and "Stan."

Eminem's non-conformance approach to songwriting helped him broach topics about pill addiction, his own mom (Debbie Mathers), his daughter (Hailie), and his daughter's mother (Kim). The namesake of all the above remains a fixture in pop culture to this very day because of him. The Marshall Mathers LP featured 17 songs and guest appearances from various emcees, such as Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Xhibit. However, the most compelling and critically acclaimed track of the bunch was Eminem's collaborative effort with a pop singer named Dido. The song by the unlikely duo was titled "Stan," and it ranks high amongst many iconic gems on several "greatest songs of all-time" lists from media outlets such as VH1 and Rolling Stone Magazine. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame also named the track one of the "500 Songs That Shaped Rock N' Roll."

Perhaps the most mind-blowing aspect of the song's legacy is that the word "Stan" was officially added to the Oxford English Dictionary back in 2018. The official definition reads, "someone who greatly admires a singer or other famous person." For Eminem, transcendent examples such as these display how remnants of his art will live on long after he passes.

Over the years, a number of rappers such as Kendrick Lamar and Tyler the Creator have sighted "Stan" as an infectious blueprint for a component of their artistry. Millyz, a Cambridge-based rapper currently signed to Jadakiss, recently dropped a remake of Eminem's classic tale about a crazed fan. His version is called "Tonight." (You can listen to it here) Upon releasing the track, Millyz took to social media to share his excitement with his supporters.

“OMG WE CLEARED THE ‘STAN SAMPLE!!!” Millyz wrote. “DROPPIN 3/9 SALUTE TO THE [goat].”

As the clip circulated online, it was re-posted by DJ Akademiks, and it eventually landed on the proverbial desk of Slim Jxmmi, from the award-winning rap duo Rae Sremmurd. When Jxmmi caught wind of the remake, he made it very clear that he wasn't feeling the vibe. Instead, Jxmmi indicated that his group also cleared a sample for the song (you can listen to it here) and that Millyz likely got the idea to make a new rendition of "Stan" from them.

“Naw this ain’t it fam!” Jxmmi wrote under the post. “Sremm4 got the banging version! Sample cleared!"

Jxmmi continued, “Wasn’t nobody on this sample till my brother (Swae Lee) leaked his version singing live."

To that, Millyz clapped back with some clarity regarding his sample and a somewhat settle verbal jab aimed at Jxmmi's physical stature.

“I cleared the sample too lil dude u be aight,” Millyz wrote.

On Thursday, Millyz published the official music video for "Tonight," it has been viewed over 200K times. Meanwhile, Rae Sremmurd is gearing up for the April release of their fourth studio LP, Sremm Life 4
