In this clip, Smokey Robinson he talks about the experience of his former group, The Matadors, auditioning for Jackie Wilson's manager. The Motown legend explains that although the audition didn't go for the group, it served as his personal introduction to Berry Gordy, Jackie Wilson's primary songwriter. The R&B legend explains that because his group's audition featured nothing but original material that he wrote, Berry was highly impressed. After being told by Jackie Wilson's managers that his group would never make it, Berry approached him when they were outside about his music and the rest is history.
