Jay-Z made an appearance on Twitter Spaces this past week to speak about his verse on the track “God Did” from DJ Khaled’s latest album of the same title. The rapper was asked to talk about the meaning behind the verse's lyrics, with one part mentioned where Hov talked about helping other Black entertainers and athletes become billionaires.
Jay-Z responded by speaking on people who criticize the moves he makes in business, as well as those who try to call out his success. Jay-Z said, “We’re not gonna stop. Hip-hop is young. We're still growing. We not falling for that trick-nology, whatever the public puts out there now.”
The rapper then touched on capitalism and race, saying, “Before it was the American Dream: 'Pull yourself up by your bootstraps. You can make it in America.’ All these lies that America told us our whole life and then when we start getting it, they try to lock us out of it. They start inventing words like 'capitalist' and things like that. We've been called n****r and monkeys and s**t. I don’t care what words y’all come up with. Y’all gotta come with stronger words. We're not gonna stop.”
The ‘Reasonable Doubt’ rapper concluded by saying, “We're not gonna be tricked out of our position. Y'all locked us out. Y'all created a system that, you know, doesn't include us. We said fine. We went our alternate route. We created this music.” Since then, Jay-Z has faced backlash, with many claiming the rapper compared being called a capitalist to being called the n-word. Listen above.
