The story of a transgender individual named Demi Minor has galvanized the entire nation. Earlier this year, the 27-year-old made headlines when she impregnated two biological females at an all women's prison in Union Township, New Jersey, called the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women. This incident became so controversial that it prompted a case in a federal court regarding whether or not trans women should be allowed to serve out their sentences in jails/prisons for women. Ultimately, the federal court ruled that the 'Americans With Disabilities Act' does not apply to the protection of trans-identified individuals when it comes to prison policies. Shortly after getting two biological women pregnant, Minor was transferred from the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women to an all men's prison facility called the Garden State Youth Correctional Facility. Minor is the only transgender individual in a new prison, where the staff and inmates have neglected to acknowledge her gender identity, which has put her in harm's way and caused her mental health to deteriorate.
“[NJDOC] have violated my right to be safe and free from sexual harassment by putting me in one of the most violent youth Correctional facilities,” Minor wrote in a blog post on the website “Justice 4 Demi” back in July. “While living here at GYSC, I have found my self (sic) under attack by young inmates who are immature and just plain ignorant towards a person like me.”
With nowhere to turn legally and very little protection, in the wake of being transferred to an entirely new setting, Minor recently attempted to remove a testicle with a razor. The failed attempt landed Minor in the emergency room, where the inmate was treated for self inflicted wounds.
“When I began to bleed, I did not even think about dying," Minor wrote in an online blog. "I just thought about finally having relief from the pain that I felt,” Minor wrote on the blog about the testicle removal incident. Being here in a male prison, amplifies the harm that I once felt… I hate it all."
Minor continued, "I started cutting again, and with a razor I begin (sic) making a incision to remove my testicle. In my head, I just wanted the pain to stop. I just wanted out of this. They don’t know what the hell that I am going through..Instead, if you have a penis, you deserve to be in a male prison. That is all central offices cares about."
Demi Minor is currently serving out a 30-year prison sentence for stabbing her foster father to death.
