For hip-hop fans worldwide, the late 2000s and the early 2010s represented the dawning of a new era in rap. The prime years of rappers such as T.I., Lil Wayne, and Kanye West began to supersede the lyrical rap generation of the previous decade and a half. With that came a litany of new game-changing emcees such as Drake, Wiz Khalifa, Tyler the Creator, Big Sean, Kid Cudi, A$Ap Rocky, and Nicki Minaj. All of those recording artists deserve their flowers for making substantial contributions to hip hop during that era. Not to be outdone, Amber Rose, one of the era's most prominent socialites, recently made the shocking claim that she too deserves her fair share of credit for curating some of the best collaborative efforts in music back then. During a sit-down interview with the co-hosts of the Higher Learning podcast (Van Lathan and Rachel Lindsay), Rose nonchalantly stated that she A&R'd music of some of the most popular rappers during their heyday.
"I have a good ear, I've A&R'd a bunch of amazing projects," Rose said.
"You've A&R'd a bunch of projects?" Lathan responded. "Like, give me an example. What have you A&R'd?"
"All my [ex] boyfriends. All of them," answered Rose with a large pair of black sunglasses on her face.
"You've A&R'd for all of your boyfriends?!" Lathan asked for clarity.
"All of them," Rose stated.
"You've A&R'd for [Kanye]?" Asked Lathan in somewhat disbelief.
"Absolutely, I put Nicki [Minaj] on Monster...I put Nicki on Monster, [Kanye] didn't know who Nicki was back then. I had Nicki pull up to the studio, and I put her on Monster."
In all fairness, Amber Rose famously dated the Vice President of A&R at Def Jam Records (Alexander Edwards) for a while, so she may have picked up a thing or two about the craft during their relationship. Regardless, if her claim is true, that means that Rose helped curate songs for the likes of 21 Savage, Wiz Khalifa, Kanye West, and more.
