Fourteen years ago, AMC debuted a pilot episode for its second-ever original series called Breaking Bad. The western crime drama would go on to usher in a new era for AMC, making the network a powerhouse on cable television while also launching the careers of actors such as Giancarlo Esposito and Bob Odenkirk into a whole new stratosphere. The critically acclaimed show has become so beloved and well-respected over time that it is often referred to as one of the greatest dramas of all time. At this point, the show's two main protagonists, Walt White Sr. (aka Heisenberg) and Jesse Pinkman have achieved an iconic stature that only seems to be growing in popularity even though the final episode of Breaking Bad aired nearly one decade ago.
Not only did Breaking Bad do wonders for its two leading men, Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, but it also helped make Albuquerque, New Mexico, a prime tourist destination, despite the show's gritty storyline about drug abuse, gang violence in the area and the Mexican cartel. The people of New Mexico have been steadfast in their support of the show and their pride in having shared in the location for which most of the scenes were filmed. To that, the creator of Breaking Bad, Vince Gilligan, recently announced, in an official statement, that he would be commemorating the show by teaming up with city officials in the unveiling of a bronze statue featuring Walt White Sr. and Jesse Pinkman.
“Over the course of fifteen years, two TV shows and one movie, Albuquerque has been wonderful to us. I wanted to return the favor and give something back," Gilligan wrote. "These larger-than-life bronzes of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman exist thanks to the generosity of Sony Pictures Television and the artistry of sculptor Trevor Grove, and I love them. It makes me happy to picture them gracing The Duke City for decades to come, attracting busloads of tourists.”
Gilligan and the city are scheduled to unveil the brand new statue on July 29th.
