From staging a fake male pregnancy to tongue kissing his backup dancers on stage, Lil Nas X knows how to generate controversy. But when the 22-year-old rapper jokingly outlined a what-if scenario where Will Smith slapped Harriet Tubman so hard that it prevented the historical figure from rescuing slaves during the 1800s, he may have taken his flair for the dramatics a bit too far.

On the morning after Oscar night, the "Old Town Road" rapper attempted to condemn Will Smith's violent act against Chris Rock with some light-hearted humor but instead, his words came across as insensitive and offensive.

"Just a reminder that if Will Smith had built a time machine and went back in time and slapped Harriet Tubman as a baby for a joke she made (however insensitive), she easily could’ve fallen backward, cracked her skull and never freed slaves," Lil Nas X wrote. "Violence is NEVER okay."

In response to the tweet, many of his followers challenged his position, while others simply brushed it off by making fun of him.

To that, the Country Music Award winner doubled down on his stance with yet another tweet that appeared to be an attempt to teach his followers a lesson about why violence is wrong. But because his words lacked straightforwardness and clarity, Lil Nas X once again left his followers with a tweet about Will Smith that they had to decipher for themselves.

"[Y’all] sitting here laughing but imagine if will smith was an average kid that no one understands mom and dad and vicky always giving him commands (bed, twerp) doom and gloom up in his room Is broken instantly by his magic little fish who grant his every wish cause in reality they," Lil Nas X added.
