Previously, a court ruling overturned the sexual assault conviction of Bill Cosby. The comedian served almost three years in prison after he was found guilty of drugging and sexually assaulting a staff member at Temple University over a decade earlier. In June 2021, a Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that a “non-prosecution agreement” with a prior prosecutor was supposed to preclude the 84-year-old from being criminally charged. As a result, Cosby was released at the end of June.

Now, the Supreme Court is reportedly being asked to review the overturned case. The DA’s office in Montgomery County, PA reportedly filed a petition asking the court to consider if that agreement should be treated as “a grant of immunity.”

In a statement issued by District Attorney Kevin Steele, he said the petition “the right thing to do because of the precedent set in this case. This decision as it stands will have far-reaching negative consequences beyond Montgomery County and Pennsylvania. The U.S. Supreme Court can right what we believe is a grievous wrong.”
