Previously, California Governor Gavin Newsom revealed that plans were in motion to reopen California's economy and that the state would be starting with retail stores. However, Newsom also made a remark this past week about the origins of coronavirus in California, saying the spread of the virus began at a nail salon.

During a coronavirus briefing in Sacramento this past Thursday, Newsom said, "This whole thing started in the state of California, the first community spread, in a nail salon. I just want to remind everybody of that and that I’m very worried about that."

When asked to clarify his statement on Friday, Newsom noted that he couldn't due to health and privacy concerns. Newsom said, "There are, and I know everybody watching understands this, health and personal privacy obligations that are bigger than any public statements that have to be abided by, legal parameters, as it relates to that first case." Since California went into lockdown to prevent the further spread of coronavirus, 33 salons that were operating illegally have been shut down according to the Governor.
