California Governor Gavin Newsom just announced plans for reopening the state's economy beginning with retail stores this Friday. Newsom lauded residents of his state for taking the social distancing measures seriously and helping mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus. "Millions of Californians answered the call to stay home and thanks to them, we are in a position to begin moving into our next stage of modifying our stay-at-home order," Newsom said. "But make no mistake -- this virus isn't gone. It's still dangerous and poses a significant public health risk," he added.

The retailers that Newsom's plan accommodates include clothing stores, bookstores, florists, sporting goods stores, and all other businesses that can provide curbside pickup. In addition to businesses being able to reopen, Newsom announced Monday that beaches will be allowed to reopen as well. This move comes on the heels of Newsom ordering beaches in Orange County, CA to be closed after beachgoers disregarded social distancing mandates.

Newsom was widely criticized by Orange County beachgoers after his closure order came down prompting hundreds to protest the order. The protesters in Orange County were just one of a string of protests popping up across the United States as people try to force their local and state governments into reopen their respective economies.
