Back in February of 2016, a 45-year-old Uber driver randomly shot at innocent people while on his shift, killing six victims and wounding two others. The driver, Jason Brian Dalton, was soon charged with six counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder, to which he surprised the court and pled guilty to all charges as opposed to standing trial.

Earlier today, Dalton was formally sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for his crimes, where he listened to numerous impact statements from the survivors of his attacks as well as the families of his victims.

Tiana Carruthers was one who survived Dalton's killing spree, and while she spoke in court she demanded that Dalton look at her, though he reportedly refused.  "You tried to kill us all. You failed. I'm standing right in front of you," Carruthers said during her statement, "I'm still standing here...how does that make you feel...look at me." The judge then noted that Dalton showed no emotion as he declined to look at one of his victims.

Dalton also heard from Laurie Smith, whose husband and son were killed during Dalton's shooting rampage, asking in court: "When you were shooting my son, and the nine bullets were riveting in and out of his body as he was dying on his ground, were you thinking of your son? were you angry at your wife and that's why you killed my husband, shooting him over and over seven times as he laid dying on the ground?" She concluded her statement by saying: "I don't and never will understand, how or why you can do what you did to them."
