The holiday season is without a doubt the most popular time of the year for online shopping, therefore, it's no surprise that suspicious websites are at a premium with deals sometimes too good to be true.
This was the case recently in Shanghai when four suspects were arrested for defrauding an "international sports company," buying over 200 pairs of authentic sneakers only to refund them with fake, alternate duplicates.
The cost of the original order was over $400,000 yuan ($58,000 thousand), which were then sold on the secondary market for $400 to $500 yuan lower.
The suspects, who were able to take advantage of a 'no-questions-asked within one-week' refund policy, were running three online shops based out of Nanjing, Jiangsu Province and have all confessed to their crimes.
