What looked to be the making of a heavily anticipated comeback for NFL wide receiver Josh Gordon, is now potentially the final chapter of what might be remembered as a story of squandered potential.

Today (Dec. 20), Gordon was suspended from the NFL indefinitely for violating the terms of the league's drug policy, making that the 6th season of his 7-year career that he's been partially or wholly suspended.

Before the NFL's announcement, Gordon made a statement of his own on social media, telling the world that he was stepping away from the game to focus on his mental health.

"I take my mental health very seriously at this point to ensure I remain able to perform at the highest level," Gordon posted in a tweet, "I have recently felt like I could have a better grasp on things mentally. With that said, I will be stepping away from the football field for a bit to focus on my mental health."

He later thanked Bill Belichick and the Patriots organization for the opportunity, with whom he totaled 40 receptions for 720 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Gordon was once thought to be an unparalleled talent at the receiver position for the Cleveland Browns, yet another return at this point would seem unlikely.
