Michael Rapaport weighed in on the controversy surrounding Sesame Street characters Bert and Ernie after a former writer for the show revealed that he modeled their skits after his relationship with his gay partner.

Sesame Street then responded with a statement that read, "As we have always said, Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves. Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics … they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation."

Rapaport somewhat echoed Sesame Street's statement, telling his followers that the characters are puppets, adding that "it's not that serious." You can check out his full video above.
