Amid the revelation from former writer Mark Saltzman that Sesame Street characters Bert and Ernie were a gay couple, Sesame Workshop issued a statement refuting Saltzman's claim, stating:

"As we always said, Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves. Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation."

What do you think about this response?

‘Sesame Street’ writer Mark Saltzman recently spoke to a publication and confirmed that Bert and Ernie are in fact a gay couple.

Saltzman joined the ‘Sesame Street’ writing team in 1984 and noted that he created Bert and Ernie as a reflection of the same-sex relationship he was in with film editor Arnold Glassman. He did not form the duo as a way to push any type of agenda.
