A total of 100 mass shootings have occurred in the United States of America this year alone as of May 17th. The statistics are staggering in regards to the amount of gun violence that takes place in this country, but yet, the people in power choose to deflect from amending firearm laws.
Another disturbing statistic is the amount of unarmed black and minority citizens that end up becoming victims at to the hands of law enforcement, who also just so happen to have the ability to disarm and apprehend mass shooters without fatally shooting their targeted suspects.
Activist, Shaun King, addressed this very topic on his Instagram account with the mugshot photo of Santa Fe High School shooter, Dimitrios Pagoutzis, with a caption reading,
"Listen. It’s not that I wanted police to shoot him, but that he was arrested, without a scratch, after murdering 10 people, while still armed w/ a handgun & a shotgun, in a trench coat, while hundreds of unarmed, non-violent African American men, women, boys, and girls are killed by police is a scandal."
Rapper turned businessman and activist, Clifford 'Tip' Harris, took to social media in support of King's statement with a screenshot IG photo of his own, stating the following, "@shaunking This is the Realest shit I’ve read all year!!! I welcome all of you masters of excuses to find a way to make this shit make sense....🤷🏾♂️ America...YOU’RE THE PROBLEM!!!!! #USorELSE✊🏽."
Unfortunately, there won't be any socio-political change throughout the country unless all parties in power participate and reach an understanding. There's no telling how many more people have to lose their lives and the culture doesn't want to see innocent patrons become a hashtag only to be forgotten weeks later. We gotta do better.
