A white man named Adam from Tampa, Florida recently made an announcement that he identifies as Filipino. Along with identifying himself as Filipino, the man changed his name to Ja Du. The man even drives a “Tuk Tuk,” which is a vehicle used for public transportation in the Philippines.

When asked about why he wanted to identify as Filipino, Adam noted that he spent much time around the culture, which includes food and events. He said, “I’d watch the History Channel, sometimes for hours... nothing else intrigued me more but things about Filipino culture.” Ja Du went on to say “Whenever I’m around the music, around the food, I feel like I’m in my own skin.”

Ja Du’s story is similar to that of Rachel Dolezal, a woman who was born white but identified as black. Dolezal even went as far as becoming the president of the NAACP in Spokane, Washington. Dolezal made an appearance on the Today Show in 2015, where she declared she was “transracial.” Since then, the term has taken off and brought many people to use the term to describe their race.
