Many Yankee fans hated to see Jesus Montero traded away in exchange for Michael Pineda in January, and now to make matters worse Pineda will be out for an extended amount of time due to injury.

On Wednesday (April 25) the Yankees announced that Pineda had suffered a torn labrum in a rehabilitation start on Saturday and that the pitcher will have to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery.

Yankees GM, Brian Cashman is responsible for making the deal for Pineda and he is taking full accountability for his decision.

"This is a massive decision gone wrong right now," Cashman told ESPNNewYork.com on Friday. "So all scrutiny is fair."

Rumors and questions are swirling about if Pineda was already damaged goods when the Mariners traded him to New York, but GM Cashman disputes any such talk.

"It's a fair question, but I can tell you we did everything possible to be sure Michael Pineda was healthy.""All I can do is lay out the facts; I can't control what people believe," Cashman said. "There are no secrets in Yankeeland, nor should there be. If something's there, it will eventually get out. I'm not going to compound the situation by lying about it."

Pineda will be operated on by the Mets' team physician, Dr. David Altchek, at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. He is expected to recover in 12 months pending extensive rehabilitation.

Cashman has mostly expressed pessimism regarding him pulling the trigger on the Pineda deal but he attempted to be more optimistic by stating,

"Right now, our hopes and dreams for this player are in jeopardy. Hopefully, someday, our fans will get to see what we expected to see from him for many years to come.

What do you think? Will Pineda ever make a full recovery and show Yankee fans what he has to offer?
