Part 1: Marine Cody Alford on Getting Shot in the Head on 1st Day of Battle of Fallujah

--------

Marine veteran Cody Alford sits down with Vlad to recount a brutal 2004 combat engagement after being shot in the head on his first day in the fight. Alford describes returning to patrols with a damaged helmet, moving into an “empty” house with Echo Company, and coming under a coordinated ambush involving grenades, machine gun fire, snipers, and insurgents firing from nearby rooftops and a minaret. He recalls Zach Cannon protecting a SAW machine gun after suffering catastrophic injuries, Marines wounded by shrapnel, and the helplessness of seeing his best friend Aaron Austin shot while fire superiority had to come first. Alford also discusses Doug Zembiec, Delta Force medics, Gomez Perez, Abrams tanks, Cobra helicopters, a 500-pound JDAM, and the delayed casualty evacuation to Mac K. A firsthand account of close-quarters combat, battlefield trauma, and survival under fire.
