Former federal prosecutor Ed McDonald breaks down the unlikely path that put him on screen in Martin Scorsese’s *Goodfellas*, the classic mob film based on Nick Pileggi’s bestselling book *Wiseguy* and the life of Henry Hill. McDonald recalls how Pileggi, then covering organized crime and public corruption for *New York* magazine, connected him with Scorsese’s team as they prepared the witness protection scene involving Henry and Karen Hill.
What began as a set-research visit to McDonald’s office turned into an accidental audition after he joked about portraying himself. At Warner Bros. offices on 51st Street, Scorsese scrapped the script and had McDonald improvise with actors standing in for Ray Liotta and Lorraine Bracco. McDonald also shares how *Mean Streets*, *The Godfather*, and his real courtroom experience helped break the ice with Scorsese before he landed the role.
