Former FBI agent Frank Storey breaks down the 1986–87 Mafia Commission prosecution, the landmark federal case that ended with all eight defendants convicted and handed life or lengthy prison sentences. Storey explains why Joe Pistone, better known as Donnie Brasco, was critical to building indictments after five years undercover inside the Mafia — so close that members considered making him before agents pulled him out over a murder assignment.
The conversation covers Pistone’s real-life relationship with Lefty Ruggiero, portrayed by Al Pacino in *Donnie Brasco*, and Storey’s view of the film’s accuracy. He also recalls the arrest of Tony Salerno, who claimed a heart attack at a pool hall before being taken to the hospital and then jailed. Storey says capos and soldiers cooperated in mob cases, but the bosses in this trial never did.
