In a recent interview, rapper Afroman discussed the controversial case of Karmelo Anthony, who was convicted of murder and sentenced to 35 years at age 18 after a self-defense stabbing incident. Afroman emphasized that Black Americans need to leave predominantly white cities where their lives and rights are often undervalued. “If he was in my black city, would Karmelo have gotten 35 years for defending himself? Probably not,” Afroman stated, highlighting systemic racial injustice in urban areas.
When asked about the victim’s father calling Karmelo a “watermelon felon,” Afroman expressed no surprise, describing it as part of the harsh reality in America. He acknowledged the father’s pain but placed greater frustration on Black communities for allowing such situations to arise. Afroman advocates for self-sufficient Black communities to reduce exposure to unfair legal consequences and racial hostility. The conversation underscored ongoing tensions around race, self-defense, and justice in America.
