Part 1: Baltimore Carl on "Little Melvin" Being the Biggest Drug Dealer in Baltimore History
--------
Baltimore native Carl shares a deeply personal story of loss tied to heroin addiction in his family. Born in 1983 to teenage parents, Carl’s mother fell into heroin addiction shortly after his birth and tragically died from an overdose when he was just four years old. She contracted HIV through needle use, a fatal diagnosis in the 1980s before effective treatments existed. Carl’s father struggled with crack cocaine during this period, leaving his grandmother to raise him. Adding to the family’s heartbreak, Carl reveals his grandfather and his then-wife also used heroin together, with his grandfather later dying from HIV as well. Despite their struggles, Carl remembers his mother as a bright student at a prestigious Baltimore high school, underscoring the devastating impact of addiction on even the most promising lives. His story reflects broader challenges faced by Baltimore families during the height of the opioid and crack epidemics.
