Part 1: Mafia Hitman Gregory Scarpa Jr: I Would've Done a Hit on My Dad if I Knew He Was Snitching
--------
In a revealing interview, Gregory Scarpa Jr. shared the tragic story of how his father, notorious mobster Gregory Scarpa Sr., contracted HIV in 1986. After undergoing ulcer surgery, Scarpa Sr. insisted on avoiding hospital blood banks due to fears about HIV contamination—a relatively new and misunderstood threat at the time. Instead, he requested blood donations from close associates, including a friend and bodybuilder, Paul Mele, who had contracted HIV from steroid use.
Scarpa Jr. explained that about 15 to 20 friends and family members provided the transfusions, unwittingly exposing Scarpa Sr. to the virus. The elder Scarpa soon showed signs of illness and was later confirmed HIV-positive. Mele eventually died of AIDS-related complications.
Scarpa Jr. described the emotional toll, acknowledging the grim prognosis during an era when AIDS was largely seen as incurable. Despite the diagnosis, Scarpa Sr. remained resilient until his passing.
