Despite initial hesitation from the filmmakers, Powell’s determination and thorough preparation helped him land the part after memorizing the script overnight and persistently asking to read for the role.
Powell credits Charles Dutton for helping him rise in the industry and shares how the character of Cutty grew beyond its original scope, prompting the filmmakers to adjust the portrayal to avoid glorifying negative stereotypes. Drawing inspiration from John Malkovich’s work, Powell added nuances to the role, including the famous tense stairway scene which remains memorable for fans.
