Part 1: Skip Bayless: I Was Raised by a Black Woman; My Parents Were Disasters
--------
Skip Bayless, known today as a prominent sports commentator, revealed the reasons behind his low scoring average of just 1.4 points per game during his high school basketball career. Bayless explained that despite showing promise in eighth and ninth grade, his transition to the varsity team brought challenges. The new coach, Don Vanderpool, who had transferred from another school, favored his own son for playing time, leaving Bayless mostly on the bench. Additionally, Bayless’s style—shooting long-range “gunner” shots before the three-point line existed—clashed with the coach’s post-oriented, traditional approach. Fearful that missing a shot would immediately bench him, Bayless rarely took chances on the court, limiting his scoring opportunities. Although basketball was a “disaster” for him, Bayless found more success playing baseball, where he was a starter and lettered for multiple seasons.
