In a candid conversation, rapper Jap5 sheds light on the complex dynamics of gang rivalries inside and outside incarceration. Contrary to popular belief, Jap5 explains that in state prison, rival gang members often coexist and maintain uneasy peace due to the strict environment and shared interests, such as business dealings or protecting their neighborhoods. “Prison was my first time learning how to coexist with my enemies,” he states. However, outside in the streets, especially in county jail or federal lockups, old conflicts often reignite into violence—what Jap5 calls “on sight” attacks born from longstanding disputes.

Now nearing 30 and with children of his own, Jap5 questions the rationale behind perpetuating violence over inherited grudges. He compares gang wars to a never-ending basketball game where “you can't kill all dogs,” reflecting on the futility of ongoing conflicts that don't lead to tangible gains like land or stability. Ultimately, Jap5 views state prison as a forced truce, while street and local jail violence remain deeply entrenched and personal.
