In a recent discussion, former Army sniper Nicholas Irving commented on the viral incident involving New York City police officers being pelted with snowballs and ice during a heavy northeast snowstorm. Irving acknowledged the restraint shown by officers walking away despite being repeatedly hit with hard projectiles, some reportedly containing rocks. “It was kind of funny at first, but then degenerate behavior,” Irving said, warning that provoking police in such ways increases the risk of violent outcomes.
He emphasized that if officers had responded with force, it could have sparked protests and riots fueled by incomplete narratives. Irving also highlighted the difficult position police face today, fearing backlash that might jeopardize their careers, even when reacting appropriately. He praised the NYPD’s composure, noting the importance of law enforcement maintaining control amid provocative behavior to keep everyone safe.
