Part 2: George Christie on Why He Didn't Call Governor Schwarzenegger to Stop Tookie's Execution
--------
In a recent VladTV interview, former Hells Angels president George Christie shed light on key differences between the Hells Angels motorcycle club and the Italian Mafia. Christie emphasized that while both are organized groups, the Mafia operates as a single unified organization complete with a commission structure, which facilitates coordinated control across families. In contrast, the Hells Angels consist of multiple independent chapters without an overarching commission, making federal racketeering cases like RICO less effective against them.
Christie also addressed the myth of Sonny Barger as the sole leader, explaining Barger was more of a de facto figurehead, with leadership often shifting depending on circumstances. Unlike other outlaw motorcycle gangs with formal international leaders, Hells Angels’ decentralized nature complicates law enforcement efforts.
The interview further touched on media portrayals, including Hunter S. Thompson’s infamous conflict with the club and how sensationalism has shaped public perception since the 1940s. Christie insists the “Mafia on wheels” label is more a media soundbite than an accurate comparison.
