Former DEA agent Hector Berrellez weighed in on the sentencing of ex-Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández to 45 years in a U.S. court for aiding traffickers. Berrellez confirmed Hernández’s case was no surprise, given the historical ties between corrupt officials and cartels in Central America. Berrellez explained how powerful figures, including some in government and intelligence agencies, have long colluded with traffickers, often under the guise of covert operations like those supporting the Contras in Nicaragua during the 1980s. He emphasized that such collaborations were part of broader schemes where political and criminal interests intertwined, involving weapons smuggling and trafficking to fund covert wars. Hernández’s conviction, Berrellez noted, is a significant step in holding high-level collaborators accountable, illustrating that even former heads of state are not above the law.
