Part 1: DEA Agent Hector Berrellez on Agreeing w/ Trump's Border Policy, Cartels Operating in U.S.
--------
Hector Berrellez explained why the Trump administration targets traffickers in Venezuela rather than directly confronting cartels on Mexican soil. Berrellez recalled a brutal 2019 incident where the Sinaloa cartel killed American women and children in Mexico, prompting Trump to urge then-Mexican President Andres Obrador to take aggressive action. However, López Obrador favored a "hugs, not bullets" approach, avoiding violent confrontation with cartels.
Berrellez noted that the Mexican government under the current leadership has shifted, cooperating with the U.S. by expelling traffickers and enforcing law enforcement collaboration. In contrast, Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro remains defiant, using his country as a transit hub to the U.S. Trump’s administration has responded by striking vessels off Venezuelan waters, employing deadly force to disrupt the narcotics flow. This strategic difference highlights cooperation with Mexico versus direct action against uncooperative Venezuelan narcos.
