Charlamagne Tha God is setting the record straight on why he gave Dame Dash the now-viral nickname “Debt Dash.” During a recent episode of his Brilliant Idiots podcast with Loren Larosa, Charlamagne broke down the thought process behind the jab, which he says was meant to highlight what he sees as Dame’s superficial tendencies.

The back-and-forth stems from Dame Dash criticizing The Breakfast Club studio, calling it dirty during one of their public spats. Charlamagne admitted that he knew Dame’s comment was more about flexing than genuine criticism, so he decided to flip the script.

“When he called our studio dirty, I didn’t know if his sneakers were dirty or not,” Charlamagne explained. “I was just like, ‘Oh, watch this. Oh, your sneakers dirty.’ I knew that was going to drive him crazy. I knew he was going to have to try to prove that his sneakers aren’t dirty.”

Charlamagne said his goal was to push Dame into revealing how much he cares about material possessions. What happened next surprised even him: Dame immediately took off his sneakers and showed them on camera in an effort to defend himself.

“I didn’t know he was going to take them off and show them to the camera,” Charlamagne continued. “But I kind of figured he was going to do something to let me just prove how superficial and materialistic he is. That’s how much he cares about that.”

Charlamagne compared Dame’s reaction to how an “OG” would handle the situation, saying someone truly secure wouldn’t have responded so quickly or defensively. “An OG would’ve waited it out, peeped the room,” he said. “Dame did it too fast.”
