Hip-hop pioneer Busy Bee shared his candid views on the state of the genre today, drawing sharp lines between artists often grouped in the same category. When asked about Drake and Kendrick Lamar, Busy Bee firmly stated that Kendrick is undeniably hip-hop, while Drake does not fit the mold. According to Busy Bee, Kendrick’s music resonates deeply with culture and substance, whereas Drake’s themes revolve around materialism and relationships, which he feels stray from true hip-hop roots. Busy Bee also weighed in on the title of greatest MC, naming legends like KRS-One, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Doug E. Fresh, and Kendrick Lamar as his top picks. Interestingly, he excluded Jay-Z from the MC list, describing Jay-Z as a “good rapper” but not an MC.
