According to court documents obtained by TMZ Hip Hop, Akon's longtime wife, Tomeka Thiam, has officially filed for divorce after nearly three decades together.
Tomeka says she and Akon were legally married on September 15, 1996, and they share a 17-year-old child. In the filing, she cited the standard “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their split. She’s requesting joint legal custody of their child but is seeking primary physical custody. Additionally, Tomeka is asking for spousal support while also requesting that the court block Akon from receiving any support himself.
While Akon has famously been cryptic about his number of wives, this filing brings some clarity to at least one of his long-term relationships. Over the years, the singer has openly discussed his nontraditional family structure. In a 2022 interview with VladTV, Akon revealed that he has nine children and grew up in a household where his father had multiple wives — something he described as normal in his upbringing. At the time, he said his lifestyle mirrored his father’s, noting that it shaped how he views relationships and family dynamics today.
Akon has yet to comment publicly on the divorce filing. As of now, it remains unclear how this will affect his family’s dynamic or whether any of his other relationships will come into play as the case moves forward.
