Christopher Whitcomb’s journey to the FBI’s elite Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) began unexpectedly. Originally a writer with aspirations for adventure and a lifestyle like Ernest Hemingway’s, Whitcomb had no plans for law enforcement. His wife applied for him after seeing an FBI commercial, kickstarting a career that would take him from writing speeches on Capitol Hill to intense FBI fieldwork. Assigned to Springfield, Missouri, Whitcomb’s first day involved a high-stakes bank robbery shootout, a baptism by fire that set the tone for his exciting FBI tenure. Springfield, known as the “world capital of exotic crime,” exposed him to a gamut of intense cases involving bank robberies and fugitives. By 1991, Whitcomb joined the FBI’s prestigious Hostage Rescue Team, becoming a sniper, assaulter, and breacher.
